Posing the deceased person as if they were still alive (or had just fallen asleep) was common in postmortem photography, especially between the 1860s and 1880s. Before then, more close-up shots were taken, and after the 1880s, a whole slew of postmortem styles were used. The person already being in the casket was the most common style in the US, though.
Erik Spiekermann’s bookshelf, which runs over two floors of his house in Berlin. The top shelves can only be reached by strapping oneself into a climber’s harness which is moved up and down by an electrically operated winch.
